Crypto Domains
Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989, the internet came 6 years earlier, on January 1st in 1983 and was borne about when isolated computer networks first started communicating with each other.
WWW is like a language we all speak on "the internet" that translates to our "website addresses". The numbers that previously represented addresses on the internet are now represented by Latin characters on the WWW that we know as Domain Names.
"In 2003, a specification was released that allows most Unicode characters to be used in domain names". unicode.org faq (IDN)
This was the beginning of non-Latin characters being recognized by the World Wide Web, but for that to happen they needed to be represented by Latin characters, and that is why IDN code (internationalized domain name) and emoji code are so similar, because they both need to be converted into Latin chars so that the World Wide Web can decipher and index them.
